Dana Kaplan, MD

Dr. Dana Kaplan is the Director of Child Abuse and Neglect for the Department of Pediatrics at Staten Island University Hospital and the Associate Program Director for the Pediatrics Residency Training Program. She also serves as the Medical Director of the Staten Island Child Advocacy Center. Dr. Kaplan is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra–Northwell.
She is board certified in both General Pediatrics and Child Abuse Pediatrics, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of the Ray E. Helfer Society. She previously served as co-chair of the Helfer Human Trafficking Subcommittee and currently is the co-chair and co-founder of the Helfer Solo Child Abuse Pediatrician (CAP) Special Interest Group.
Dr. Kaplan earned her medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and completed her Pediatrics residency at New York University. She went on to complete her fellowship in Child Abuse Pediatrics at Hasbro Children’s Hospital/The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Her academic and clinical interests focus on commercially sexually exploited youth. Dr. Kaplan has lectured regionally and nationally and has authored multiple chapters and articles on child abuse and human trafficking. Most recently, she co-authored the 2023 AAP Clinical Report “Exploitation, Labor, and Trafficking of Children and Adolescents” and the 2025 AAP Policy Statement “Human Trafficking and Exploitation of Children and Adolescents,” both published in Pediatrics. She was also featured on the AAP’s Pediatrics on Call podcast to discuss human trafficking and the updated policy statement.
