Susan Budassi Sheehy, PhD, RN, FAEN, FAAN
Dr. Sheehy received a BS and PhD in Nursing from Boston College, an MSN in
Cardiovascular Nursing from the Catholic University of America, and an MS in Health Policy
and Clinical Outcomes Research from Dartmouth College. Her background is in emergency/
trauma/flight nursing, combat casualty care, spinal cord injuries, Military and Veterans’ health
and wellness, process improvement, and evidence-based practice. She served on active duty in
the US Army Nurse Corps, as a flight nurse in the US Air Force Reserves, and as a professor
at the US DoD’s Uniformed Services University Daniel K Inouye Graduate School of Nursing
and the F Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, MD where she received the Dean’s Award
for Outstanding Teaching, the Daisy Outstanding Faculty Award and was named the USU
Graduation Class Marshall (selected by her students). In 2020 she was named Honorary
Commander of the Delaware National Guard.
She is a past president of the Emergency Nurses Association and the Emergency Nursing Foundation.
ENA honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award and the Judith Kelleher Award. She is a
Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the Academy of Emergency Nursing. Author
of over 80 journal articles and the author/editor of 12 editions of Emergency Nursing
Textbooks, she has presented and continues to present statewide, nationally, and internationally.
She and her therapy dog Abby are frequent visitors to healthcare facilities and community events
throughout Delaware and southern Pennsylvania.
