Heather A. Fagan, MD, MS, FAAP is the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for Graduate Medical Education at Nemours Children’s Hospital Florida (NCHFL) in Orlando, Florida.  Dr. Fagan is an Professor at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and serves as the Academic Assistant Dean for the University as she leads all medical student programs for the College of Medicine at NCHFL.  Dr. Fagan is a pediatric critical care physician and medical educator who joined Nemours in August 2014 to begin developing the graduate medical education infrastructure at NCH. In 2016, under her leadership, the hospital was awarded institutional accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The inaugural residency training program in pediatrics has received continued accreditation and is thriving, and multiple subspecialty fellowships have been accredited. During her time at Nemours, Dr. Fagan has been awarded the Nemours Service Excellence Award for Community Service and for Excellence in Education.  Additionally, she received the Deans Award from the University of Central Florida College of Medicine in recognition of her contribution to medical student education and program development.  Most recently, Dr. Fagan was selected to represent Nemours Children’s Health with participation in Leadership Florida and Cornerstone Class 40.

Prior to Nemours, Dr. Fagan was a faculty member at the University of Chicago where she initiated her academic career in medical education, eventually leading the University of Chicago Pediatric Residency Training Program as program director, and overseeing all subspecialty fellowships in the Department of Pediatrics as the Associate Chair for Education. She was recognized as a fellow to the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators at the University of Chicago as well as won numerous teaching and mentorship awards during her tenure there.  

Dr. Fagan earned a medical degree and a Master of Science in Pathology at The Chicago Medical School in North Chicago. She completed a pediatric residency, chief residency and pediatric critical care fellowship at the University of Chicago. She is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics.
