Safety Microburst: The 4D's Session 1
This introductory session builds awareness of everyday situations where patient safety may be at risk. Participants explore common barriers to speaking up, including hierarchy and uncertainty, and reflect on their role in creating a culture of safety. Through discussion and examples, learners begin developing the confidence and mindset needed to recognize safety concerns and consider when action is necessary.
Target Audience
Physicians, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Pharmacists, Physician Associates, Social Workers, and other interested in this content.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity participants will be able to:
- Describe the importance of proactive safety and how factors such as perfectionism, emotional responses, and cognitive biases (e.g., blind spots and the ladder of inference) can impact safe decision-making.
- Apply the 4D’s framework, including techniques like “name it, tame it,” to recognize and manage emotional and cognitive influences in order to reduce risk and support safer patient care.
