From Prenatal Diagnosis to Delivery and Beyond: Optimizing Outcomes for Rare Genetic Musculoskeletal Disorders
Clinicians caring for pregnancies affected by rare genetic musculoskeletal disorders may have limited evidence and experience available to guide prenatal prognostication, counseling, delivery planning, and referral for specialized multidisciplinary care. In osteogenesis imperfecta and other skeletal dysplasias, severe prenatal imaging or genetic findings may be interpreted as predictive of poor or lethal outcomes even though prenatal findings do not always accurately predict postnatal survival, function, or long-term clinical needs. The Maternal Fetal Health physicians will collaborate with another subspecialty (Ortho) to present a case review.
Target Audience
Physicians
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity participants will be able to:
- Recognize the limitations of prenatal prognostication for osteogenesis imperfecta and other rare skeletal disorders when counseling families regarding anticipated postnatal outcomes.
- Identify opportunities for early referral and coordinated multidisciplinary management of patients with suspected rare genetic musculoskeletal disorders from the prenatal period through infancy and childhood.
- Apply principles of coordinated prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal management to future patients
