Nemours Children's Orthopedic Lunch & Learn Series | June

Dr. Reid Nichols, pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, will present the latest research on bone density and the importance of peak bone mass. Understanding the formation of bone from mesenchymal stem cells and its metabolism is primary to optimizing it. Bone health consultations for children should be performed routinely. This session will cover the physiology of bone metabolism, discuss how to optimize bone health, and share effective ways to counsel patients on vitamin D serum levels and appropriate supplementation.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity participants will be able to:

  • Explain the physiology of bone formation and resorption starting with stem cells and progressing through cellular pathways controlled by growth factors, which can be manipulated to allow bone formation to be optimized.
  • Understand peak bone mass and its relationship to peak height velocity in adolescents, as well as the reason for increased fractures during this time.
  • Effectively counsel their pediatric patients on how to optimize bone health through nutrition and exercise. Additionally, they will be able to explain the appropriate vitamin D supplementation for patients 0-18 years of age.
