Human Factors for Healthcare

This session provides an overview of human factors in healthcare and their role in creating safer, more effective care environments. Learners will examine how people, technology, workflows, and organizational processes work together to influence everyday clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity participants will be able to:

  • Integrate human factors principles and methodologies into patient safety and quality improvement initiatives across problem identification, system analysis, intervention design, and evaluation phases.
  • Analyze healthcare safety and quality challenges through a human factors and systems-thinking lens, identifying how work system elements influence clinician performance and patient outcomes.
  • Apply the SEIPS framework to examine complex healthcare processes and identify interactions among people, tasks, technologies, environments, and organizational factors that contribute to performance of the team.
