Today's presentation features Laura Clary, RN, Forensic Nurse Examiner and Program Director of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) Sexual Assault Forensic Examination, Domestic Violence & Child Protection Program and Danielle Nickles, Child Protection Program Coordinator at Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC). The GBMC Child Protection Program works with children experiencing various types of maltreatment, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, human trafficking, and substance-exposed newborns.

Laura Clary, MSN, RN, FNE-A/P, SANE-A, SANE-P is a Registered Nurse, Forensic Nurse Examiner and Program Director of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) Sexual Assault Forensic Examination, Domestic Violence & Child Protection Program. She has been a Nurse for over 13 years. She is certified to care for patients across the lifespan that have been victims of sexual assault, child abuse, intimate partner violence and human trafficking. Mrs. Clary obtained National professional certification as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE-A) from the International Association of Forensic Nurses in 2013, and SANE-Pediatrics in 2022.
In addition to her work with patients in the hospital, community education and training is very important to her. Mrs. Clary lectures at high schools, colleges, and other organizations throughout Baltimore County on healthy relationships, boundaries, internet safety and the services offered at GBMC. She is a Maryland Board of Nursing approved Forensic Nurse Examiner Instructor and has taught and precepted registered nurses, physicians, social workers and law enforcement from all over the country. She is an active member of the International Association of Forensic Nurses, as well as the Maryland Child Abuse Medical Providers (CHAMP), Midwest Regional SANE Peer Review and is Chair of the Baltimore County Sexual Assault Response team, and partners with the Maryland Center for School Safety.
In May of 2017 she was nationally recognized for her work and was awarded the title of “America’s Most Amazing Nurse” by Prevention Magazine and The Dr's Television show, and additionally awarded Baltimore County’s Woman of the Year in 2018, and Daily Records Nurse of the Year in 2023.
Danielle Nickles, MS, LCPC is the Child Protection Program Coordinator at Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC). Danielle received her bachelor's degree from Wingate University, and she received her master's degree in applied psychology from Francis Marion University. Danielle has over 12 years of training and experience in the field of child abuse, child advocacy, and child trauma treatment. Danielle has been a forensic interviewer and a child & family therapist at a Child Advocacy Center in South Carolina. While there, she provided trauma focused counseling services for children and adolescents who have experienced child abuse, conducted over 500 forensic interviews, and lead counseling groups for adolescent boys with problematic sexual behaviors. Danielle has also worked as a school-based therapist at an elementary school in South Carolina, where she provided counseling services to children with a variety of behavioral and emotional needs. Danielle joined the GBMC Child Protection Program as Coordinator in November of 2020.
During her time with the Child Protection Program, Danielle has helped train Emergency Department nursing staff on the recognition and response to child abuse and human trafficking; she’s been a panelist at the Dr. John Adam’s Compassionate Caregiving Rounds, providing education to all interested hospital staff regarding Human Trafficking in the Baltimore County region; she has provided training and outreach to a variety of community members (including teachers, school counselors and social workers, school resource officers, local pediatricians, local clergy members, and other members of the community) regarding child abuse, domestic violence, and child sex trafficking. Danielle, and the team she manages, respond to all concerns or reports of child abuse, maltreatment, or child trafficking presenting at the GBMC Emergency Department or other child protection needs throughout the hospital.
Danielle has been nominated for multiple GBMC Compassionate Caregiver Awards and was recently selected as a member of The Baltimore Banner’s 2024 Emerging Leaders.
