Lori Gurien, MD, MPH, FACS
Dr. Gurien is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in both General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery, and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. She is also an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at Cornell University. After graduating from college, she joined Teach For America before attending medical school and graduating with her Medical Degree from the State University of New York – Upstate in 2011. After her first two years of general surgery residency, she obtained her Masters of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy. She completed a research fellowship before finishing her General Surgery residency at the University of Florida – Jacksonville. She then began her fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences before accepting a position at Nemours Children’s Health in Jacksonville. As a member of the Division of Pediatric Surgery, she works with residents at the Mayo Clinic Florida, Florida State University, University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, and Orange Park Medical Center.
During her time in Arkansas, Dr. Gurien served as a committee member for the Arkansas State Trauma System Preventable Mortality Study Group. She then joined the Pediatric Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Committee at the University of Florida Jacksonville during her years as a resident. She has been dedicated to the Advanced Trauma Life Support program run by the American College of Surgeons and now operates as a Course Director for the program. She also worked as a course instructor for the Rural Trauma Team Development Course during her time in Arkansas. Dr. Gurien has published in multiple journals with a focus on quality improvement and outcomes research. Her projects have emphasized the role of disparities on clinical outcomes, resource utilization, cost-effective surgical care, and inequalities of payment models in the United States healthcare system. During her career, she has presented her research at national and international professional meetings.
