Maureen Leffler, DO, MPH
Dr. Maureen Leffler completed her medical training at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by a residency in Pediatrics at Nemours/Thomas Jefferson University, where she proudly served as Chief Resident. She subsequently trained in Pediatric Rheumatology at Nemours/Thomas Jefferson University, where she remained as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Rheumatology.
Motivated to support her colleagues in their efforts to improve the care they provide, and recognizing the relationship between clinician engagement and patient experience, Dr. Leffler joined the Patient Experience team at Nemours as a Physician Liaison in 2018. In this role, she has provided support to colleagues in their initiatives to improve the patient experience. Subsequently, Dr. Leffler served as the first Chief Well-being Officer at Nemours. In her role, she has led the organization through an enterprise assessment of well-being, implemented a Peer Support program, expanded the scope of resources available to support the emotional and mental health needs of Nemours associates and directed targeted clinical team assessments and systems-based interventions. Dr. Leffler played a major role in leading Nemours COVID-19 response, serving as the lead of the Enterprise PPE Task Force and Enterprise Covid Leadership Group.
As chief resident, Dr. Leffler was inspired by her own experience at the Leadership Skills Training Program for Chief Residents, and subsequently contributed to the design and facilitation of a leadership curriculum, where she developed content expertise in wellbeing. Dr. Leffler officially joined the ACGME in 2016 as Course Director for the Chief Resident Leadership Training Program, focused on training chief residents in medical and surgical subspecialties. Under her current leadership, this course has expanded in scope, with curriculum changes specific to individual and programmatic wellbeing and diversity, equity, and inclusion. In 2020, Dr. Leffler was named as the co-chair of the ACGME’s National Task Force on Wellbeing in responding to the COVID-19 outbreak. She and her team developed a national GME Well-being community, which she continues to convene on a bi-monthly basis, to understand the evolving challenges to wellbeing, share strategies to improve wellbeing, and learn from the experience of national experts.
