Dr. Carroll completed her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University, followed by her Doctor of Medicine degree at Drexel University College of Medicine in 2011. Dr. Carroll completed her residency in pediatrics at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio where she first developed an interest in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). She pursued a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Emory University / Children's Healthcare of Atlanta with the goal of expanding her knowledge of ECMO for critically ill children. Following her pediatric critical care fellowship, she completed an advanced fellowship in pediatric cardiac critical care at Emory University / Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and subsequently joined the faculty at NCH-DE in 2020.
Dr. Carroll’s clinical, research, and education interests center on harm reduction for children supported on ECMO. Recent research includes the identification of oxidative stress in ECMO circuits, management of pulmonary embolism on ECMO support, and a study of the mortality and complications associated with venovenous versus venoarterial ECMO for neonatal patients. She is also involved in ECMO quality improvement and education, including membership on the education committee of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) and a position as a member of ELSO's National Simulation Faculty Team. She is co-editor of “ECMO 101,” a web-based course designed to provide fundamental ECMO knowledge for members of ELSO and provides ECMO-related didactic education locally, nationally, and internationally.
