2026 Preceptor Development Class

The Preceptor Development Class is an interactive half day program designed to strengthen the skills of nurses and clinical team members who support new staff during orientation and professional development. Participants will explore the role of the preceptor and learn practical strategies for coaching, feedback, competency validation, conflict resolution, and learner engagement. The course also examines adult learning principles, emotional intelligence, burnout recognition, and methods for adapting teaching approaches to meet the needs of diverse learners. Through discussion, simulation, and collaborative activities, participants will build confidence and skills to create a more consistent, supportive, and effective precepting experience.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of the preceptor in supporting orientation, competency development, and professional growth of new team members. 
  • Apply coaching, feedback, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence strategies to support effective preceptor and learner relationships.
  • Use adult learning principles, competency validation methods, and adaptable teaching strategies to support learner engagement and successful transition into practice.
