Stephen Lawless, MD, MBA, FAAP, FCCM

Stephen T. Lawless, MD, MBA, has been a physician residing in Delaware for over 36 years and has distinguished himself within Delaware, nationally and internationally known outstanding clinician and unselfish leadership improving the care of all residents of Delaware.
Dr. Lawless is a Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at Nemours and Sidney Kimmel Jefferson Medical College. He was Boarded in Pediatrics with a sub-board in Pediatric Critical Care. His prior role was as Senior Vice-President and Chief Clinical Officer for Nemours. He previously served on the Delaware Board of Licensure and Discipline for which he still assists with investigations. Currently, he is on the Executive Board of the Delaware Health Information Network, the Nemours IRB committee, and Editorial Board/Review Panels (Journal of Medical Quality, Medical Society of Delaware Academic Channel, Patient Safety, HERD, Pediatrics, and the Journal of Medical Regulation). His quality and safety expertise includes the coordination of patient safety, infection control, clinical outcomes, risk management, Credentialing, Accreditation, research, advanced data analytics, and human subjects’ protection. Dr. Lawless previously provided oversight of clinical informatics and the evolution of the system electronic medical record and data warehouse. Dr. Lawless has also authored peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on safety and quality and spoken nationally and internationally. He has served on various governmental and research review teams and the Patient Safety Committee of NQF. Beckers has recognized him over multiple years as one of the nation’s leading experts on safety and by Modern Healthcare in 2019 as one of the Top 25 innovators in healthcare internationally.
Major accomplishments (not all inclusive):
- Established the first Pediatric interhospital transport team and service in Delaware in 1991 increasing access to specialty pediatric care for all children of Delaware.
- Lead the development of the first pediatric critical care unit in Delaware This unit also resulted in transforming Delaware from one of the nation’s worst infant mortality rates to having an actual mortality rate 33% lower than expected compared to all other US other academic pediatric centers.
- Received international attention for the conception and operationalized first “Clinical Logistics Center” that provided remote inpatient 24/7 monitoring via direct visualization and electronic medical record of pediatric inpatients in multiple states and hospitals.
- Served on multiple Governor-appointed committees including The Board of Licensure and Discipline (at one time President), the Delaware Health Information Network or DHIN (serving on Executive Committee), the inaugural Delaware Advanced Practice Nurse Committee, the Delaware Respiratory Care Committee, and inaugural Delaware Anti-human sex trafficking committee.
- Previously served on the Board of the St. Patrick’s Center in Wilmington.
- Currently he serves in the Medical Society of Delaware Environmental and public health, Medical Legal Committees.
- Is the current Editor for the Medical Society of Delaware’s Academic Channel and serves on the editorial boards/advisories of seven other journals.
- During Covid was part of DMAT and emergency response medical staff of BEEBE and previously was on staff at both Nemours and Christiana.
