Dr. Steven Abman is Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Pediatric Heart Lung Center (PHLC) at the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado.  Trained in Pediatric Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Abman has maintained strong translational research and clinical interests in neonatal lung injury, lung vascular development, pulmonary hypertension, chronic lung disease in the newborn (bronchopulmonary dysplasia, BPD), and related topics.  He has received uninterrupted NIH-funding for research and training grants throughout his academic career. Dr. Abman founded and was past Director the Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Network (PPHNet) and was one of the co-founders and is Vice Executive Chair of the international BPD Collaborative. He is currently a co-leader of the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute (PVRI) Pediatric Task Force and the PVRI-IDDI Pediatric Workstream. He served as a member of the Pediatric Task Force for the 7^th World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension, and he recently completed his tenure as President of the American Pediatric Society.  His work has been recognized through several national awards as recipient of the Outstanding Investigator Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics (1998), the E. Mead Johnson Award of the SPR (1999), the Distinguished Achievement Award of the American Thoracic Society (2015), the Maureen Andrew Mentorship Award from the SPR (2015), the Mary Ellen Avery Award (2016) from the APS and SPR, and the Arvo Yllpo Medal Award from the 5 medical schools in Finland, the Finish Foundation for Pediatric Research, the Finnish Pediatric Association and the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare Finland (2017).  He also received the Robert F. Grover Prize “for outstanding contributions to the study of the effects of hypoxia and high altitude on the pulmonary circulation,” from the ATS Assembly on the Pulmonary Circulation (2025). He has published over 490 peer-reviewed publications and numweoua review articles, editorials, and chapters, and continues as an editor for the Fetal and Neonatal Physiology textbook, now in its 7^th edition.  Dr. Abman has been active in promoting career development through mentorship experience, which includes current roles as co-PI leading the NHLBI T32 Multicenter Training Program in Pediatric Pulmonary Vascular Disease and NHLBI R38 StARR Resident Research Training Program at the University of Colorado. He currently holds NHLBI grants for laboratory and clinical research, including a multicenter randomized trial for pediatric PH, physiologic studies of lung development in premature infants and basic mechanisms of neonatal PH.
