Huayan Zhang, MD

Huayan Zhang, MD, is an attending neonatologist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She is a professor of clinical pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Zhang was initially trained and worked as a pediatrician in China and then completed her pediatric residency training and neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship training at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) between 2003-2006. She has been actively engaged in the care of critically ill newborns and infants, teaching of medical students, residents, fellows, and other care providers. She is a well-respected master clinician and teacher at CHOP.
Dr. Zhang’s clinical focus and research interests are in the prevention and management of bronchopulmonary dysplasia or infant chronic lung disease. She started the Newborn and Infant Chronic Lung Disease (NeoCLD) Program at CHOP in 2010 and currently serves as the director of the program. Dr. Zhang, together with a multidisciplinary team of colleagues, has developed this program into one of the world’s largest centers dedicated to the clinical treatment and knowledge advancement for infants with severe chronic lung disease. She joined Guangzhou Women and Children Medical Center as the chief of neonatology in August 2018, while continue to serve as the director of the NeoCLD Program at CHOP. She is a member of the Society of Pediatric Research, American Adecamy of Pediatrics, and serves as an executive board member of the BPD Collaobrative and the chair of the BPD Collaborative Asian-Pacific Network. She also serves as the chiar of the academic advisory committee of the Chinese Neonatal Network.
Over the years, Dr. Zhang has devoted her time and efforts in international activities to ensure children everywhere in the world have access to quality care and the best interventions. As a member of the CHOP Global Medicine team, she has been a key member of CHOP’s international collaborations in China and facilitated the training of numerous international pediatricians, neonatal fellows and medical students from Canada, Chile, China, Eastern Europe, India, Korea, and Mexico. She won the World Outstanding Chinese Physician Huo Yingdong Award in 2024 for her contribution to advance neonatal care in China and around the world.
