Dr. Howard is a Royal College and American Board certified academic Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon. In September 2025, he returned to Canada to serve as the Division Head of Orthopedic Surgery at the IWK Health Centre and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He holds the rank of Professor of Surgery within Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine and is a member of the University Senate.

For the six years prior to returning to Halifax, Dr. Howard practiced at Nemours Children’s Hospital–Alfred I. duPont Campus in Wilmington, Delaware, where he also served as their Director of Orthopedic Research. Before joining Nemours in 2019, he spent more than five years as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Sidra Medicine, a greenfield women’s and children’s hospital in Doha, Qatar, partnered with Weill Cornell Medical College. He played a central role in planning and activating the hospital, now a center of excellence for pediatric care in the Gulf region.

Dr. Howard completed his medical degree at Memorial University in 1998 and his Orthopedic Surgery residency at the University of Calgary in 2003. His fellowship training included Pediatric Orthopedics at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and Pediatric Spine Surgery at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand. He was awarded the Japanese Pediatric Orthopaedic Association Traveling Fellowship in 2004 (Kanagawa, Yokohama, Machida City). He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2003 and earned certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in 2022.

In addition to his medical training, he holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Memorial University and completed graduate studies in Biodesign at Stanford University. In this capacity, he continues to utilize his engineering background in medical device design with several patents and a product under development.

He is an active member of numerous professional societies, including the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, European Academy of Childhood Disability, Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Hip Hope Network, and the Canadian Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Howard currently contributes to several committees within these societies, including the POSNA Research Committee, AACPDM Scientific Committee, Canadian Pediatric Orthopedic Society Research Committee, AACPDM Awards Committee, and the POSNA Quality, Safety and Value Initiative Committee. He is the incoming Scientific Co-Chair for the 2027 AACPDM Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, USA.

Dr. Howard’s clinical interests include cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophies, spinal muscular atrophy, peripheral neuropathies, and other neuromuscular conditions, including spine disorders. His research focuses on muscle basic science and epidemiological studies in cerebral palsy and neuromuscular diseases, particularly spinal muscular atrophy. In 2019, he co‑edited the globally recognized textbook The Pediatric and Adolescent Hip: Essentials and Evidence (Springer Nature). He is also lead editor for the upcoming multi-authored text: Neuro-Orthopedics (2027, Elsevier).
