S. Paul Sharkey, Chief Executive Officer, Mid-Atlantic Health Plan

 Paul and his team are committed to helping people live healthier lives and making the healthcare system work better for everyone. Paul was recently named CEO of the Mid-Atlantic Health Plan for UnitedHealthcare.  As CEO, Paul is responsible for UnitedHealthcare’s Employer & Individual business driving growth, quality, profitability and overall performance for health benefit plans that serve more than 2.0 million people in Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia and West Virginia. He is based out of  UnitedHealthcare’s Columbia, MD office.

Prior to this role, Paul served as Executive Director of the Pennsylvania & Delaware Health Plan since 2023.  Paul was responsible for business development and account management, including profit/loss management, strategic planning, operations, and client implementation and retention for employer groups with up to 5,000 benefit eligible employees.  He effectively led a diverse team of healthcare professionals accountable for  the acquisition of new medial and specialty benefits (dental, vision, life, financial protection) clients across the United States. 

Prior to joining UHC in 2008, Paul worked for The Beacon Group of Companies, a regional health insurance  brokerage firm in suburban Philadelphia, Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA and The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Paul is very involved with a variety of charities and other nonprofit organizations including the  American Cancer Society, Our Mother of Consolation Parish, Springfield Little League Softball.  Paul and his wife, Martha, co-founded Today is a Good Day in 2014 which provides hope and builds community for families who have experienced the neo-natal intensive care unit.  Paul is an active member board member of Today is a Good Day and the Mainline Chamber of Commerce. He is a former board member of Pennsylvania National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals (formerly GPAHU).

Paul holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing & International Business from The Pennsylvania State University. Paul lives in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania with his wife, Martha and daughters Claire (15) and Rose (10).
