Jurgen de Graaff, MD PhD
Jurgen C. de Graaff, MD, PhD, is an anesthesiologist and epidemiologist. He obtained his M.D. from Maastricht University and his Ph.D. from the Academic Medical Center, at the University of Amsterdam on the thesis entitled: “The use of microcirculatory techniques in the assessment of pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of critical limb ischemia”.
He was trained in anesthesiology at the St. Antonius Hospital, in Nieuwegein, The Netherlands. After completing a fellowship pediatric anesthesia he became staff anesthesiologists at the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital, University Medical Center Utrecht and Sophia Children’s Hospital, Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. He was a visiting researcher at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. In March 2025 he became associated professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medicine, New York. He specializes in providing anesthesia services for the most vulnerable patients; newborns and infants.
Dr. de Graaff is an active clinical researcher. He is particularly interested in improving perioperative care for children by studying what happens before, during, and after surgery. He has participated in numerous international research projects, including NECTARINE, GAS, and MPOG.
He has also developed reference values for blood pressure in children under anesthesia. He is committed to integrating clinical observations with research inquiries, and vice versa.
He has published over 120 peer-reviewed papers in journals such as the British Journal of Anaesthesia, Anesthesiology, and Lancet. He is an editor for the European Journal of Anesthesiology, Pediatric Anesthesia, and the Journal of Medical Systems.
He has mentored over 45 master students on their research projects and successfully guided 7 doctoral students as co-promotor. He was president of the European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology (ESPA) from 2022 to 2023 and honorary secretary from 2016 to 2021.
