Osman Altun, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.A.P., is a board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Nemours Children’s Health, specializing in pediatric gastroenterology with special interest in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Dr. Altun is a prominent advocate for multidisciplinary, patient-centered care, believing that the most successful outcomes for children and families are achieved through the seamless integration of gastroenterology, surgery, radiology, nutrition, and psychological support.

Clinical Leadership & Professional Background

Prior to joining Nemours, Dr. Altun served as an Assistant Professor at the University of South Alabama and USA Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital. During his tenure, he held dual leadership roles as the Medical Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Medical Director of Pediatric Subspecialties. His leadership philosophy is rooted in:

• Integrated Systems of Care: Developing regional referral networks that improve patient access and communication.

• Primary Care Advocacy: Strengthening the partnership between subspecialists and community pediatricians to ensure continuity of care from the first point of contact.

• Quality Improvement: Serving as a principal investigator for clinical initiatives, including active participation in the ImproveCareNow network.

Education & Research

Dr. Altun’s clinical expertise is backed by a rigorous academic foundation. He completed his pediatric gastroenterology fellowship at the Yale School of Medicine/Yale New Haven Hospital and earned his Ph.D. in infectious disease and clinical microbiology from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.

His current research and academic interests include:

• Biologic Therapies: Advancing the use of targeted treatments in pediatric IBD.

• Care Delivery Models: Designing innovative, collaborative models that bridge the gap between various medical specialties in the care of pediatric gastroenterology diseases. 

• Peer-Reviewed Scholarship: Contributing to medical literature and presenting nationally on multidisciplinary disease management.

Beyond his clinical and research pursuits, Dr. Altun is deeply committed to mentorship and physician leadership development. He remains an active voice in medical education, training the next generation of residents and medical students to provide compassionate, evidence-based care to children with complex gastrointestinal needs.
