Dr. Adam Griesemer was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He received his BA in Chemistry from Harvard College in 1998. Following graduation, he served as a research technician at the Transplantation Biology Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. There, he developed his life-long passion for research in transplantation immunology with a special emphasis on transplantation tolerance and xenotransplantation. He graduated AOA from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine in 2003. Dr. Griesemer performed his residency in General Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. During that time, he spent an additional 3 years as a Research Fellow at the Transplantation Biology Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. The research he performed during his Fellowship was recognized with Awards from the International Xenotransplantation Association and the American Transplant Congress. Dr. Griesemer then performed his surgical fellowship in Abdominal Organ Transplantation at Columbia University Medical Center, which he completed in 2013. He was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Medial Center from 2013-2022. During that time, he was named the Surgical Director of Living Donor Liver Transplantation and the Surgical Director of Pediatric Liver Transplantation. He also directed research in the Griesemer Lab, which was a part of the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology. He received research grants from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the National Institutes of Health. He was also named a Rising Star in Transplantation Surgery by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons in 2020. Dr. Griesemer is currently an Associate Professor of Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center, the Surgical Director of Living Donor Liver Transplantation and Pediatric Liver Transplantation, and is involved in xenotransplantation research at NYU Langone. His clinical interests focus on living donor liver transplantation utilization and minimally-invasive donor surgeries. His research continues to focus on inducing immune tolerance to organ transplantation and on bringing xenotransplantation to widespread clinical application.
