Maria Lester
Maria Lester is a dedicated individual who has committed to helping families facing chronic illness. She began her journey as a caregiver at Nemours 19 years ago and has since become the GI Family Support and Advocacy Coordinator. Being a mother of two children with chronic illnesses, Maria has first-hand experience with the challenges that families encounter when dealing with a life-changing diagnosis. Her experiences have inspired her to become an advocate and supporter for families.
Maria's transition from caregiver to hospital employee has given her a unique perspective. This has made her an invaluable asset in bridging the gap between medical professionals and the families they serve. Her dedication and compassion have made her an inspiration to many, and she continues to make a positive impact on the lives of those around her.
Maria is an active member of the Nemours Family Advisory Council, Patient Experience Steering Committee, ImproveCareNow Parent Family Advisory Council (where she serves as the Connections co-lead), and the Autoimmune Liver Disease Network for Kids. She has also served as a mentor and advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Central Florida Chapter. Maria has participated in advocacy efforts, including meetings with members of Congress to support the Special Diabetes Program for Type 1 Diabetes, which provides $150 million annually for Type 1 diabetes research.
Maria’s most recent project is serving as a co-author with Dr. Paul Enlow, Nemours Delaware, on a study to establish a minority Type 1 Diabetes Family peer mentoring program to increase the use of T1 diabetes technology.
