Michael Morowitz, MD, FACS

Michael Morowitz, MD, FACS is an attending pediatric surgeon in the Department of General and Thoracic Surgery at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and completed his residency at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania followed by a fellowship at University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Morowitz’s clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery in newborn infants. The Morowitz laboratory studies changes in the gut microbiota during critical illness, with a particular interest in strategies to reverse antibiotic- and diet-induced alterations in the microbiome. Dr. Morowitz is a principal investigator of the NANO (NICU Antibiotics and Outcomes) Trial, a blinded randomized multicenter trial funded by the NICHD to study the risks and benefits of empiric treatment of early onset sepsis in newborn VLBW infants. Dr. Morowitz is particularly invested in supporting the development of physician-scientists and the advancement of researchers studying host-microbial relationships.
