Cohort studies: Prof. Göpel is founder and primary investigator of the German Neonatal Network (GNN). This prospective cohort study was supported by the BMBF since 2008 and has enrolled more than 25.000 preterm infants. Until 2025, more than 3.500 children (who were enrolled in the GNN between 2009 and 2015) were tested at 5-7 years of age and 1000 children at age 10-14 years.

Clinical trials: Prof. Göpel was the primary investigator of the randomized controlled AMV trial (Lancet. 2011), the pro.LISA RCT (Trials. 2023) and co-primary investigator in the randomized controlled NINSAPP-trial (JAMA Pediatr 2015). In addition, Prof. Göpel participated in numerous clinical trials.
