Edgardo Szyld, MD, MSc

Dr. Szyld is a neonatologist who has trained and spent most of his professional time in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In 2015, Dr. Szyld joined the faculty of the University of Oklahoma, where he was a Professor of Research and the Clinical/Translational Research Director for the Department of Pediatrics. In 2023, he joined Indiana University as a Professor of Pediatrics, where he is currently the Clinical Research Director for the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and leads the clinical research activities in the NICU at Riley Hospital for Children. Apart from graduating medical school from Universidad de Buenos Aires, he holds a master’s in clinical trials from the University of London.
In 2004 he was elected to the Society for Pediatric Research and in 2018 to the American Pediatric Society. Dr. Szyld has also served on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation, Newborn Subsection since 2003 and is currently the co-chair of the American Heart Association/American Academy of Pediatric Neonatal Writing Group, which he has served on since 2015.
With a focus in neonatal resuscitation, Dr. Szyld’s expertise is in multicenter pragmatic clinical trials. He has organized and participated in large studies evaluating different procedures in the delivery room leading to changes in practice globally. In addition, he has participated in large multicenter studies evaluating different strategies to reduce perinatal HIV transmission and impact of neonatal resuscitation training.
Dr. Szyld coordinates the clinical research activities in the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, providing advice on the design and conducting of clinical studies, as well as being instrumental in the mentoring and training of young faculty and fellows. He leads the multidisciplinary team performing clinical and simulation studies on neonatal resuscitation including ventilatory support, chest compressions, and monitoring. He performs systematic reviews, meta-analysis, and teaches fellows and residents the critical appraisal of the literature promoting evidence-based medicine.
Dr. Szyld is the co-chair of the Neonatal Resuscitation Symposium that was moved to Indianapolis in 2023. It is the only symposium that focuses on neonatal resuscitation’s latest research, education, clinical practice, global activities, and ethical concerns. The program includes many national and international experts, invited speakers, and discussants.
He has authored more than 100 scientific peer review articles.
