Matthew Laughon, MD, MPH

Matthew M. Laughon, MD, MPH, is a Professor with tenure in the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine within the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Laughon has served as the primary mentor or co-mentor for more than 25 trainees at UNC and Duke University. He has authored over 185 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of neonatal epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, and clinical pharmacology, with trainees serving as first authors on more than 60% of these manuscripts.
Dr. Laughon's research is supported by multiple federal agencies, including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (R33/R61, MPI: Laughon), and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) through the Pediatric Trials Network (PI: Benjamin, Duke). In addition, Dr. Laughon has served as Protocol Chair for six NICHD Pediatric Trials Network studies involving ten off-label therapeutics in neonates and is an active member of the NICHD PTN Steering Committee. He also serves as the principal investigator for UNC’s participation in the NICHD Neonatal Research Network (MPI: Cotten, Duke (contact PI); Laughon, UNC; and Moore, ECU).
