Originally from Puerto Rico, Dr. Mauras graduated with a Bachelors in Science and a Chemistry Major from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), Magna Cum Laude. She attended Medical School at UPR, followed by a Residency in Pediatrics at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, MN, and a Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Since then, she has been at the Nemours Children's Clinic, now Nemours Children's Health, in Jacksonville, FL, where she was the Chief of the Division of Endocrinology. Presently she is Vice Chair of Pediatrics for Research and Director of Research for Nemours North Florida. Dr. Mauras is a Clinical Research Scientist keenly interested in the interaction of hormones and nutrients as children grow and develop through puberty. Main areas of study have been disorders of growth and puberty, including metabolic effects of GH/IGF-I, impact of estrogen suppression in males, role of estrogen and its route of administration in Turner syndrome, e.g. Over the last 15 years she has developed a critical interest in type 1 diabetes, glucose counter regulation, advanced diabetes technologies and the impact of type 1 diabetes on the brain in children. Dr. Mauras has been the co-principal investigator of the Diabetes Research in Children Network and NIH-funded consortium of 5 academic Pediatric endocrine centers and a coordinating center. She has been steadily funded by NIH, private foundations (Thrasher Research Fund, JDRF, e.g.), industry and philanthropy. She has over 210 papers in the peer reviewed literature to-date. Dr. Mauras has been a member of NIH study sections, advisory panels, consensus guidelines and meeting planning committees. She has traveled extensively, lecturing nationally and internationally on her research. She is heavily involved in the training of Pediatric Residents and Pediatric and adult endocrine fellows, as well as Medical Students, and holds the title of Professor of Pediatrics at the Mayo College of Medicine with whom Nemours is affiliated. She remains engaged in the care of Pediatric Endocrine patients in clinic.
