Carl Hunt, MD
Dr. Hunt is Professor of Pediatrics Emeritus at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, U.S. Prior to that, he was affiliated with the National Institutes of Health, where he was Director of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research. Prior to that, he was Professor and Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Toledo Medical School, an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University and Division Chief of Neonatology at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, and an Assistant Professor and Neonatal ICU Director at the University of Minnesota (1970-75). Dr. Hunt received his M.D. from Yale University (New Haven. Connecticut, U.S.) and his A.B from the University of Rochester (Rochester, New York, U.S.).
Dr. Hunt is a neonatologist and has been active in research related to infant apnea, control of breathing and intermittent hypoxia, and sudden unexpected death in infancy. He was a principal investigator for the NIH-funded Collaborative Home Infant Monitoring Evaluation (CHIME) study, and a study of infant care practices including sleep position. He is Chair of the Board of Directors for the American SIDS Institute, and is Chairman of their Research Advisory Council.
Most recently, he is Co-PI for the NIH-funded ICAF study entitled “Effects of Caffeine on Intermittent Hypoxia in Infants Born Preterm,” a just-completed multi-site randomized clinical trial.
