Frank Bloomfield, ONZM, BSc (Hons), MBChB, MRCP (UK), FRACP, PhD, FRSNZ
Frank Bloomfield is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and a Professor of Neonatology. He took First Class Honours in Experimental Immunology and Oncology from the University of Manchester, UK, in 1987 and then MBChB, also from Manchester, in 1990. He obtained his MRCP in paediatrics and then moved to New Zealand, where he obtained FRACP and also a PhD in Paediatrics from the University of Auckland. Frank then moved to Toronto for a post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Physiology, University of Toronto, and a departmental fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children, where he as the first fellow for the Acute Care Transport Team.
Frank returned to Auckland in 2002 and took up a clinical academic role at the Liggins Institute, University of Auckland, practising clinically in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at National Women's Hospital. He has held the roles of President of the Perinatal Society of New Zealand and President of the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand and was a Council Member of the Perinatal Research Society (USA). Frank has served on several Ministry of Health committees. In 2015 he was appointed Director of the Liggins Institute and in 2023 Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Auckland. In 2024 he was appointed Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to neonatology and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
Frank's research interests focus around nutrition and growth of the fetus and neonate, including long-term outcomes of altered nutrition and growth, and have included animal studies, laboratory research and clinical trials.
