This is an intensive one day course designed for pediatricians who would like more experience with pediatric emergency scenarios.  This course is geared specifically for the pediatrician working in an urgent care setting or emergency department and also for the pediatric hospitalist who may be called upon to respond to an emergency.  We will provide hands on training in critical pediatric emergency skills.  This will include pediatric specific airway management techniques and pediatric resuscitation procedures.  Using high fidelity simulation, this course will also focus on the crisis resource management skills needed to successfully manage a critically ill pediatric patient.

Objectives:

  • Discuss priorities of care for the pediatric patient
  • Identify indicators of illness and injury in the pediatric patient
  • List unique features of the pediatric airway
  • Use appropriate airway adjuncts to secure a pediatric airway
  • Define child maltreatment
  • Identify indicators of child maltreatment
  • Describe techniques to obtain vascular access in pediatric patients
  • Use appropriate medications in pediatric resuscitation
  • Discuss the newest recommendations for advanced life support in pediatric patients
  • Manage complex children in the Emergency Department
  • Develop an approach to common and unusual pediatric illnesses encountered in the Emergency Department
  • Work effectively as a member and a leader of a healthcare team
