Objectives
- Discuss the guidelines in the diagnosis and management of deep vein thrombosis, with special attention to provoked vs unprovoked causes as well as common vs uncommon risk factors.
- Highlight the need for reserving a constant index of suspicion in cases of thrombophilia where a rare and/or global disease process may be underlying.
- Review of myelopathy in pediatric patients.
- Discuss metabolic factors that impact neurologic and hematologic physiology.
- Identify the characteristic gait deviations observed in patients with spastic diplegia and explain the underlying neuromuscular and biomechanical contributors to abnormal gait patterns.
- Formulate a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for patients with acquired spinal cord dysfunction by incorporating gait and orthotic management, neurogenic bowel and bladder care, skin preservation, and pain management.
Practice Change
- Delineate provoked vs unprovoked thrombosis, identify risk factors for thrombosis, and refer to appropriate specialists in thrombophilia cases occurring in medically complex patients.
- Review and validate the diagnoses from referring providers to maintain a broad differential diagnosis.
