Course Title: High Voltage Danger: Assessment and Management of Electrical Burns in Pediatric Patients

Course Description: 

This one-hour course provides healthcare professionals with essential knowledge for assessing and managing electrical burn injuries in pediatric trauma patients. Participants will learn to recognize the unique pathophysiology of electrical injuries, identify associated complications such as cardiac arrhythmias and deep tissue damage, and implement evidence-based interventions for stabilization and treatment. The session will cover initial assessment, wound care, fluid resuscitation, monitoring for systemic effects, and criteria for surgical referral, emphasizing strategies to prevent long-term morbidity.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to 

  • Identify the mechanisms and clinical presentation of electrical burns in pediatric patients.
  • Perform a comprehensive assessment, including cardiac monitoring and evaluation for hidden injuries.
  • Apply evidence-based management strategies for wound care, fluid resuscitation, and pain control.

Target Audience: Emergency department nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals involved in the acute care of pediatric cardiac patients.
