Cece Calhoun, MD, MPHS, MBA

Cecelia Calhoun, MD, MPHS, MBA, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Yale University School of Medicine, Medical Director of the Adult Sickle Cell Program, and Associate Chief of Operations at Smilow Cancer Hospital. A hematologist and NIH-funded investigator, Dr. Calhoun applies implementation science methods to improve outcomes for people living with sickle cell disease across the lifespan. Her research centers on health literacy, self-management, and the high-risk transition from pediatric to adult care—the period when adolescents and young adults with sickle cell disease are most vulnerable to gaps in care and adverse outcomes.
Under her leadership, the sickle cell program at Smilow has reoriented care from episodic, emergency-driven encounters toward sustained, outpatient-centered support integrating behavioral health and social work for both pediatric and adult patients. Dr. Calhoun completed her pediatric residency at Michigan State University and her fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine, where she also earned a Master of Population Health Sciences. She is one of three inaugural Pozen–Commonwealth Fund Fellows in Minority Health Leadership at the Yale School of Management, through which she earned her MBA. Her work bridges clinical innovation, research, and a sustained commitment to health equity.
