Course Description:
Newly hired nurses in the Pediatric Emergency Department enter practice with varied clinical backgrounds and levels of proficiency. This education series is designed to bridge the practice gap between novice nurses and competent, confident pediatric ED nurses by supporting the transition from task-oriented care to purposeful, clinical decision–driven practice.
Through a combination of didactic instruction and high-fidelity simulation, participants will build foundational and progressive competencies required to function effectively as bedside emergency nurses and as designated trauma/treatment room nurses. The program emphasizes clinical reasoning, prioritization, teamwork, and role clarity within the fast-paced and unpredictable emergency care environment.
Content is informed by direct observation of practice gaps and learner-identified needs and is structured to support progression along Benner’s Novice-to-Competent Continuum. Learners will develop the knowledge, skills, and professional judgment necessary to safely care for pediatric emergency patients, respond to high-acuity and trauma situations, and integrate evidence-based practice into routine nursing care.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to
- Demonstrate enhanced clinical competence in the Emergency Department through effective application of evidence-based nursing practices at the bedside.
- Demonstrate enhanced nursing competence in the trauma/treatment room by applying role-specific assessment, prioritization, and intervention skills.
- Integrate acquired knowledge into routine nursing practice to shift from task-oriented care to purpose-driven, patient-centered nursing practice.
Target Audience:
This program is intended for all novice nurses who care for ill children in the NCHFL ED.
