Objectives

  • Recognize subdural and epidural suppuration in children.
  • Request the correct imaging study to detect these conditions.
  • Identify pediatric patients with signs and symptoms of intracranial infections.
  • Describe microbiologic causes and surgical indications in patients with intracranial infections.

Practice Change

  • Order magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain with contrast when intracranial suppuration is suspected.
  • Choose appropriate imaging and antibiotics for patients with suspected suppurative intracranial infections.
