Course Title: Mass Casualty and Disaster Preparedness: Building for Pediatric Trauma Response

Course Description: 

This one-hour course prepares healthcare professionals to respond effectively to mass casualty incidents and disasters involving pediatric patients. Participants will learn key principles of disaster preparedness, triage strategies, and resource allocation specific to pediatric trauma care. The session will cover coordination with emergency systems, surge capacity planning, and evidence-based approaches to optimize outcomes during large-scale emergencies. Emphasis will be placed on developing protocols that address the unique physiological and psychological needs of children in crisis situations.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to 

  • Explain the core components of disaster preparedness and mass casualty response for pediatric populations.
  • Apply pediatric-specific triage principles during simulated mass casualty scenarios.
  • Develop strategies for resource allocation and surge capacity planning in pediatric trauma care.

Target Audience: Emergency department nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals involved in the acute care of pediatric cardiac patients.
