Assessment and Management of Traumatic Brain Injury in Children with Intracranial Bleeds: Monitoring, Medications, and Osmotic Therapy
Course Description:
This one-hour course equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage pediatric patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) complicated by intracranial bleeding. Participants will explore evidence-based strategies for neurological monitoring, pharmacologic interventions, and the use of osmotic therapy to reduce intracranial pressure. The session emphasizes early recognition, critical decision-making, and best practices to optimize outcomes in pediatric trauma care.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to
- Recognize signs and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure and neurological deterioration in children with traumatic brain injury.
Identify key assessment tools and monitoring techniques for detecting changes in neurological status.
- Explain the indications, dosing principles, and monitoring requirements for osmotic agents (e.g., mannitol) and other critical care drips used in managing pediatric TBI with intracranial hemorrhage
Target Audience: Emergency department nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals involved in the acute care of pediatric cardiac patients.
