Assessment and Management of Degloving Injuries in Pediatric Trauma

Course Description: 

This one-hour course provides healthcare professionals with critical knowledge for assessing and managing degloving injuries in pediatric trauma patients. Participants will learn to recognize the unique challenges these complex soft tissue injuries present, including vascular compromise, infection risk, and functional impairment. The session will cover initial wound evaluation, stabilization techniques, pain management, and strategies for surgical referral and multidisciplinary care. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based practices to optimize outcomes and prevent long-term complications.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to 

  • Identify the mechanisms and clinical presentation of degloving injuries in pediatric patients.
  • Perform a thorough assessment to evaluate tissue viability and associated trauma.
  • Implement initial management strategies, including wound protection and infection prevention.

Target Audience: Emergency department nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals involved in the acute care of pediatric cardiac patients.
