Thomas Kopec, BSN, RN, WCC
Tom became a nurse after completing a diploma and associate program in 1996 as part of a midlife career change. He met his wife Mary while attending the BSN Nursing program where they graduated in June of 1999 after getting married in April of that year. They formed an instant family with Mary's three children and were blessed with two more children together.
Tom worked in home care for the first three years of his nursing career and joined Nemours in 2000 as a staff nurse on 3CS. He displayed proficiency as a night shift nurse and was identified as a resource for orienting new nurses. Around 2003 he joined the nursing staff development department and was assign to the 3CS and 3F nursing units as an educator. In this capacity he assisted in orienting new nurses, aides and travel nurses. In this role he observed inconsistencies in how nurses interpreted wound care orders. This prompted attending a wound care course resulting in wound care certification in 2005 and the development of an impromptu wound care program at Nemours. In 2008 this Impromptu program became an official department and lead to Tom's career as Nemours wound care nurse. He was a one man show and provided wound care at the bedside, in the outpatient clinics and in the OR as requested.
Tom's career was interrupted in 2019 for health reasons and finally rejoined Nemours with the General surgical department in 2021.
Tom incorporates, humor, clinical proficiency, his extensive nursing experience, compassion and a belief that every patient deserves access to the best healthcare available.
