Melissa “Missy” S. Roffman, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, Well-Being Psychologist, Nemours Childrens' Health
Dr. Roffman’s role is new not only to Nemours but in healthcare and well-being work more broadly. Her role is pivotal to building a culture of well-being at Nemours, by enhancing supports for emotional distress into the system and serving as liaison to appropriate mental health resources for ALL associates. In addition to group level support after traumatic events, she also provides psychoeducation on coping strategies and skills to enhance resilience, manage stress and burnout, and improve overall mental and emotional health. These strategies and skills support the engagement and healthy teamwork necessary to provide high quality, compassionate care to patients.
Dr. Roffman's interest in this area developed over 15 years of working in clinical roles on the front lines alongside multidisciplinary healthcare teams in primary care, endocrinology, and geriatrics. She saw firsthand how the pandemic intensified the challenges inherent to working in healthcare, creating a secondary pandemic of burnout, compassion fatigue, and trauma.
As the sole psychologist embedded in medical teams for the vast majority of her career, she has a deep understanding of the culture of healthcare and stigma that prevents many professionals from seeking help. She has long been a resource and support to colleagues experiencing workplace stress and trauma, and developed a wide variety of programming aimed at enhancing well-being.
“Having worked on the frontlines in healthcare for many years myself, it means so much to me to be able to help others be happier and healthier in the crucial work they do serving children and families.”
