I joined the faculty of Nemours Children’s Hospital in October 2012 as Faculty in the Division of Nephrology and now serve as Section Chief. 

My career began at the University of Florida in Gainesville, after completing a fellowship in pediatric nephrology at the same institution. I was Medical Director of the Dialysis Unit and helped standardize our treatment protocols for our pediatric patients on dialysis. I had an active role in the education of residents and fellows. I was the coordinator of the Fellowship Core Curriculum in Scholarly Activities, chaired the Scholarly Oversight Committee for Nephrology Fellows and coordinated the Fellow Lecture Series. I also participated in the Pediatric Residency Mentorship Program.

My previous roles allowed me to understand the relationships between various departments, faculty, administration and our shared missions of excellent patient care and medical education. My time at Nemours has been very rewarding from an educational standpoint. I have had the privilege to work with the UCF College of Medicine Students as part of the FIRE (Focused Inquire and Research Experience) Mentorship Program and as facilitator in the Renal and Gastrointestinal Systems Module small-group sessions.  In the clinic, I precept students on their third year Pediatrics Clerkship as well as those who are on a four year elective in Pediatric Nephrology.  I also contributed to the Versant New Graduate RN Residency Program at Nemours with lectures on pathophysiology and management of acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, genitourinary emergency, and nursing care expectations for nephrology patients. In collaboration with our PICU, we have developed a training program in continuous renal replacement therapy which includes a hands-on workshop with the CRRT device for the nursing staff.  

At the moment, I am serving as Chair of the Medication Safety Committee. The Committee strives to ensure the safe and effective use of medications within our Hospital through identification of opportunities for and facilitation of medication safety initiatives and performance improvement. In collaboration with Pharmacy, I actively monitor, review and provide treatment recommendations for our Nephrotoxic Injury Risk Stratification System (NINJA).  

Although I am primarily a clinical nephrologist, I have always had an interest in research.  I am a primary investigator in several multi-centered industry sponsored research projects in Pediatric Nephrology, have collaborated in studies with the Nephrology Division at other Nemours sites in various quality improvement projects pertaining to medication nephrotoxicity in hospitalized patients, blood pressure monitoring in kidney transplantation, immunization in nephrotic syndrome and transplant patients and transition of care.
