Rebecca Karimi, PhD

Biography
Dr. Rebecca Dominguez-Karimi is an oral historian, podcaster and writer with a PhD in Comparative Studies and a certificate in Gender Studies from Florida Atlantic University, who specializes in Latinx history and Women’s studies. She founded “The Voces de Hispanos Oral History Project” with the Jacksonville Historical Society and gathered over 50 life stories from Latinos in Duval, Clay, Nassau and St. John’s Counties. This unique and ongoing oral history collection documents the population growth and history of Hispanics in the greater Jacksonville area. Narrators originate from all parts of Latin America and the US. Her historical research focuses on the expanding Latinx community in NE Florida. She taught English at Nova Southeastern University and Broward College, in Ft. Lauderdale. She also founded the Treasures from Aztlan Oral History collection that contains Latino narrators who lived through the Jim Crow era.
My ancestors have navigated El Rio Triste—the River of Sadness—for centuries. I too must now begin my journey, treading its infinite dark waters to drink of its pain and heartache, so I may find my voice.
