Thomas Anderson, PhD, MD
Professor T. Anthony Anderson, Ph.D., M.D. is a pediatric and adult anesthesiologist and Professor of Anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. His research focuses on improving the management of acute pain, reducing the need for systemic pain medications (particularly opioids), and decreasing the risk of developing chronic pain. He is particularly interested in the development of novel technologies, including focused ultrasound, to reduce acute pain after injury and surgery, decrease opioid exposure, and prevent the transition from acute to chronic pain.
Dr. Anderson’s translational research program centers on the development of noninvasive, image-guided focused ultrasound technologies for peripheral nerve modulation and pain management. In parallel, his research group uses national insurance claims databases and perioperative EMR data to conduct quality improvement initiatives and evaluate pediatric healthcare outcomes, including opioid use, pain management, regional anesthesia, perioperative efficiency, and healthcare disparities.
More recently, Dr. Anderson has developed an interest in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in perioperative and pediatric healthcare and regularly lectures on the evolving role of AI in perioperative medicine, patient safety, healthcare operations, and outcomes research.
