Maria Petrini, MD, FAAP
I have been a Nemours physician for 20 years including training as a pediatric resident. I joined the Pediatric Hospitalist group when it was formed back in 2006, and I practiced both hospital medicine and primary care for several years. My current clinical work takes place at the Rockland Primary Care Practice in Wilmington, in a busy academic environment teaching residents and medical students but also holding my own patient panel. My areas of interest are wellness/preventative medicine, children with medical complexities, infectious diseases and public health, disparities in care, health literacy and social determinants of health.
I have more than 10 years of experience as the Physician Champion for Utilization Management and for the Clinical Documentation Integrity Program. As part of these teams, I have focused on medical necessity, accurate documentation, risk stratification, readmissions, case management, discharge planning and high utilizer populations. I also work as the Medical Director of Medical Management for the VBSO, working with the medical management team and the payers on risk stratification, population management, disease self-management, gaps in care and wellness/prevention. I most recently took the role of the Medical Director of the KidWell Network, formerly Delaware Children’s Health Network, which is a physician-led clinically integrated network in the Delaware Valley with the goal of improving health outcomes for the children in the region. The network emphasizes and values relationships with community colleagues, quality of care and equity.
At Nemours I am part of several committees including the Utilization Management Committee, Asthma Management Steering Committee, Vaccines Steering Committee, Primary Care Pathways Oversight Committee, Medical Staff Executive Committe, and I chair the Quality and Care management Committee for Kidwell Network
I was born and raised in Argentina where I completed a 4 year-residency in Pediatrics before moving to the US. I completed my second residency in Pediatrics at AI duPont Hospital for Children/Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and joined Nemours after that. Throughout my career, I was honored with several awards including the 2006 John W Maroney MD Award for Excellence in Pediatric Ambulatory Care, the 2018 Physician Service Excellence Award, the 2020 Outstanding Outpatient Educator of the Year Award and the 2023 Academic Excellence Award for Education for the Division of General Academic Pediatrics.
I live in North Wilmington with my husband, who is also a physician at Nemours, and two children who are 16 and almost 13 years old. I enjoy traveling, ballet and classical music.
