Deborah Schwengel, MD, MEHP, FASA

Deborah Schwengel is Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and is a pediatric anesthesiologist and medical education leader. She is a graduate of Duke University and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, completed pediatrics residency at Yale and anesthesiology residency and fellowships at Johns Hopkins, and subsequently completed the Master of Education in the Health Professions at Johns Hopkins University.
She has held multiple leadership positions in education and was anesthesiology residency program director for 10 years. She is Editor-In-Chief of the ASA Patient Safety Editorial Board and is an active member and leader of the Society for Education in Anesthesia. She initiated the medical education journal club at SEA.
She is known for creating innovative curricula including the “College Days” at the Johns Hopkins residency, an applied physics curriculum and a disaster preparedness game-based learning tool. In recent years she has become very interested in the science of learning and has studied the use of quantitative EEG to understand neurocognitive engagement.
She has other passion projects including disaster preparedness, sustainability and various global health projects.
