Richard Schmidt
Dr Schmidt is a Pediatric Otolaryngologist and member of the Division of Otolaryngology at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware for over 2 decades. He currently serves as the interim chief of the division. In this role he oversees a busy pediatric otolaryngology group, including 8 pediatric otolaryngologists, 7 advanced practice providers and 3 specialty nurses. Dr. Schmidt is also the Director of Ambulatory Surgical Services for Nemours, Delaware Valley. In this role, he works with surgeons, and leaders in perioperative nursing and anesthesia to grow outpatient surgical volume in Nemours’ two Ambulatory Surgical Centers in the Delaware Valley.
A graduate of Drew University and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Schmidt completed his residency in otolaryngology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. After residency, he was a partner in a busy otolaryngology group for several years before obtaining a fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Nemours.
Dr. Schmidt is an Associate Professor in Otolaryngology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He has authored or co-authored over 2 dozen peer-reviewed papers and several book chapters.
Within the field of pediatric otolaryngology, Dr. Schmidt’s clinical interests include surgical management of sleep disordered breathing/sleep apnea, airway disorders and congenital neck masses. While at Nemours he started a transoral robotic surgery (TORS) program for the management of tongue base lesion and refractory sleep apnea.
