Course Title: Silent Danger: Assessment and Management of Pediatric Drowning and Submersion Injuries

Course Description: 

This one-hour course addresses the critical recognition and management of pediatric drowning and submersion injuries, often referred to as the “silent danger” in trauma care. Participants will learn to identify early signs of respiratory compromise, understand the pathophysiology of drowning, and implement evidence-based interventions to prevent secondary complications such as hypoxia and neurological injury. The session will cover initial assessment, airway and ventilation strategies, fluid management, and post-resuscitation care to optimize outcomes for pediatric patients.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to 

  • Perform rapid assessment and prioritize interventions for airway and breathing.
  • Apply evidence-based management strategies, including ventilation and fluid resuscitation.
  • Develop a post-resuscitation care plan to prevent secondary complications and improve survival.

Target Audience: Emergency department nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals involved in the acute care of pediatric cardiac patients.
